Join Partner Barry Massarsky at Music Biz 2024 on May 14, 2024, for an insightful discussion titled "Complete Control?: The Rewards & Risks of Cross-Copyright Ownership" from 4:00 PM to 4:50 PM CT.
Historically, recording and composition copyright ownership has been the realm of very separate companies, with a few notable exceptions. In what now seems clear as an industry trend, partially driven by the surge in music catalog acquisitions, more and more music companies are owning both recording and publishing copyrights in their catalogs or are trying to bring together separate recording and publishing operations into a unified whole. There are clear economic advantages in controlling even a portion of each copyright, including promoting music having both royalty streams, and enhanced sync monetization.
However, this trend has also shined a light on a glaring music industry problem — the lack of an easy way to manage recording and publishing data in the same place. Currently, there are different standards for each side of copyright, and they do not talk to each other. How can companies harness the benefits of owning both sides while mitigating the challenges? In this panel, executives who deal with this issue every day will share their tips and solutions.
